In PPG's ongoing series of member profiles, this month BARKS features Rose Lesniak of Rose Lesniak Dog Trainer, LLC in Miami, Florida.

"In her first career, Rose Lesniak was a performance poet working in New York City.

She then moved to Florida where she worked at the Miami Beach Police Department in the Special Victims Squad.

As part of a team there she assessed and investigated the abuse and neglect of children.

Q: Can you tell us a bit more about yourself, how you first got into animal behavior and training and what you are doing now?

Dead as a dog.

He left her like a dog.

He treated him like a dead dog in the street.

I wouldn't even do that to a dog.

Is he friendly?

He was an animal, he wasn't a human being!

It's like teaching on old dog a new trick.

I knew it was her time to die.

I can never let dead dogs lie.

Lie down with dogs, you end up with fleas.

Even dogs have dreams

Not like machines.

Sitting in a cage for long hours is no way to start a puppies life or make a new dog feel safe and loved. Be prepared to have a dog, take off work for at least a week and hire a force free or positive based trainer if you need help.

 A sensory deprived dog is an outsider. The more sensory info the dog receives the more developed her mind will become. Combine good food with feeling safe and that's a good beginning. Nerve cells in the brain grow and make new synaptic connections to other nerve cells when stimulated. If a pup does not have a stimulating environment she might not be accepting of new sights, sounds and experiences. This...

                Dying doesn't bother me

                Not being able to live

Happiness fills the room...mother.

Lying in a safe bed alone with my new parent.

We walk with this cord between us.

We walked first in her huge house

I have my own bed next to her.

She looks at me all night till her eyes close.

and I close mine.

I wake up and there she is!

And we get busy, then eat...then walk

And makes me laugh.

Designer, Sou Fujimoto, whose prototype took about two months to design, explained that anyone could take one of the projects upon him/herself and have it built in a few days. His piece, made from timber, would only take about one or two. "I was thinking about the architecture for dogs of tomorrow...[a] field for communication between the owners and the dogs, so not just sheltering dogs but to make different new types of communications...We made shelves for the owner to use in their daily lives so through their daily behaviors they can have a natural communication to each other...Every owner...

Rose Lesniak is proud to be a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. APDT is a professional organization of individual trainers who are committed to becoming better trainers through education.

The Association of Pet Dog Trainers was founded in 1993 by Ian Dunbar DVM, Ph.D. as a forum for trainers to associate with one another and to discuss topics of mutual interest. They have since become a member-driven organization producing educational conferences in locations throughout the United States. Their annual conference has grown from 250 participants to 1,500 participants.
